Welcome to Dalnaglar Castle Estate, a Victorian gem nestled in the heart of Glenshee known in Gaelic as Gleann Shith, or “The Glen of Peace.” This tranquil estate is steeped in history and surrounded by the breath-taking beauty of the Scottish Highlands.
History of Dalnaglar Castle and Estate
The origins of Dalnaglar trace back to the late 18th century, when the Shaw family established a hunting lodge known as Dalnaglar Cottage. This modest dwelling laid the foundation for the grand baronial mansion that stands today. In 1864, Daniel Robertson, a banker from Blairgowrie and financier to Queen Victoria, commissioned the construction of the current castle. Designed by Her Majesty’s architect from Balmoral, the castle was envisioned as a luxurious retreat amidst the wild Scottish landscape.
Tragically, Robertson passed away before the castle’s completion. In 1867, the estate was sold at a traditional ‘roup’ (auction) for £10,000—a significant sum at the time.
Over the years, Dalnaglar Castle has witnessed various chapters of Scottish history, serving as a private residence and a haven for those seeking solace in nature. Today, the castle and its surrounding 500-acre estate offer guests a unique blend of historical charm and modern comfort. From the serene banks of the Shee Water to the majestic peaks of the Cairngorms, Dalnaglar invites you to explore its rich heritage and natural splendour.
Deer Stalking and Duck Shooting
For those who enjoy traditional country pursuits, Dalnaglar Estate offers the opportunity to stalk deer across our beautiful grounds or take part in duck shooting during your stay. We provide all the necessary equipment to ensure a seamless experience, though seasoned guests are most welcome to bring their own guns if they prefer. These activities offer a memorable way to immerse yourself in the estate’s natural surroundings while adding a touch of adventure to your time at Dalnaglar.
We can also arrange shooting days on neighbouring estates, each offering its own unique landscape and character. This allows guests to enjoy a variety of environments and sporting traditions during their stay, ensuring every day in the field is both distinctive and memorable.
Salmon and Trout Fishing
Situated on the banks of the River Shee, the estate has a fishing stretch of just under a mile offering excellent salmon and trout fishing for both novice and experienced fishers alike. The Shee Water is located at the head of the River Ericht tributary of the Tay, which is arguably the most important spawning tributary of the whole Tay system and has had a consistently strong run for the last 40 years. The Ericht has a fish counter on it, which regularly sees 10-15,000 fish through in a season which typically runs from May to August.
There is also rainbow and brown trout fishing on our private Loch with a five-person dinghy available for guests to enjoy.
Walking on the Estate
Dalnaglar Estate is surrounded by beautiful walking routes for all ages and abilities, from gentle riverside strolls to hill climbs with breathtaking views of Glenshee and the Grampians. Whether you’re exploring woodlands, spotting wildlife by the lochan, or tackling a more challenging trail, there’s a walk here to suit everyone. Please remember some paths cross farmland, so dogs must be kept on leads.
Nature and Wildlife
Dalnaglar Castle is surrounded by some of the most stunning and diverse Highland scenery, where wildlife thrives. Guests can expect to see red deer gracefully moving across the hills, playful otters along the streams, and a variety of birds from majestic golden eagles and buzzards to colourful songbirds. In the woodlands and gardens, you may spot foxes, hares, and even the occasional pine marten. Every walk or drive around the estate offers the chance for a new discovery, making your stay a truly immersive experience in Scotland’s natural beauty.
There are lovely walks in the area surrounding Dalnaglar, down by Shee Water, or up the hillside exploring the woodland of the estate or the small loch nestling in a pocket in the hill, the 54 mile Cateran Trail passes through the Estate and the Southern Cairngorms and Cairngorm National Park are right on your doorstep.
